Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, I’m sticking with the “Bond, James Bond” theme today and going with “Live and Let Die” with Yaphet Kotto and Jane Seymour. Today’s film follows on the heels of my recommendations of the “007” flicks “For Your Eyes Only,” “Moonraker” and “The Spy Who Loved Me” that stars Roger Moore.

“Live and Let Die” gets its international flair by having Moore come to the United States as the dictator over a fictional Caribbean nation (“Dr. Kananga” played by Kotto) has come under the scrutiny of, well, everyone and there’s a link to a black gangster (“Mr. Big”), who has a nationwide network dealing in drugs.

Along the way in “Live and Let Die,” you get Moore going from New York City to the Caribbean island (where he meets and becomes enamored of Seymour as “Solitaire,” who is the tarot-reading adviser to the dictator) and back to the U.S. for some interesting scenes in and around New Orleans – including a neat “chase” scene with Moore “driving” a plane at an airfield with “007’s” encounter with alligators and a crocodile plus a nice boat chase on a Louisiana bayou.

The audience is also introduced to Haitian vodou (or just voodoo) through the tarot, scenes on the fictional island and the character of “Baron Samedi” – the leader of the dead in Haitian vodou.

“Live and Let Die” is also the first Bond film to feature a black master villain and gang and “007” has his first on-screen romance with a black woman. No one would even blink today, but in 1973 it was a major statement from a studio production.

“Live and Let Die” isn’t in the top five of the “007” franchise in my opinion, but it is better than my three other recommendations. It is Moore’s first outing as “Bond, James Bond” and he sets his standard for how he’ll play “007” in his next seven “Bond” efforts (the most of any actor playing the character).

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Live and Let Die.” It is available on a variety of rental platforms. You will thank me later if you find it and watch “Live and Let Die.”
