Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go with a social commentary comedy that targets middle America (circa 1977), corporate life and how crime can help even a suburban white family: the original “Fun with Dick and Jane” with George Segal and Jane Fonda.
“Fun with Dick and Jane” is the story of an aerospace executive (Segal) who gets fired; finds his suburban existence turns to crap; he has to go on food stamps; he gets caught up in an immigration roundup because he speaks Spanish to a bartender; and winds up in cahoots with his wife (Fonda) on a crime spree that essentially lands him back in corporate America.
Whew!
“Fun with Dick and Jane” was “rebooted” 32 years later with Jim Carrey and Téa Leoni, but, as you probably already know, the original is superior to the remake.
Segal does his usual wonderful job in “Fun with Dick and Jane” playing executive “Dick Harper.” He’s smooth and conveys the character perfectly. Fonda, too, gives a solid performance as the suburban housewife first forced to work (and be seen by her social-set friends) and then the willing accomplice to a crime spree.
The couple’s crimes range from robbing a convenience store (Segal backs out of robbing a bar because its entire clientele is black) to robbing a restaurant (when Segal and Fonda come up to him, the manager says, “How was the food folks?” Segal then pulls a gun. “That bad, huh?”).
You’ll find bigger crimes in “Fun with Dick and Jane,” including the climactic affair at Segal’s former company’s headquarters, but I’ll leave those for you to see yourself.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Fun with Dick and Jane.” It is available to rent on a variety of streaming platforms. You will thank me later, if you find and watch “Fun with Dick and Jane.”
