Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go with my all-time underrated comedy that has never received the attention it deserves: “Big Trouble” with Tim Allen and Rene Russo and just about the best supporting cast of all time with Zooey Deschanel as a bitingly sarcastic teenager and Jeanne Garofalo simply perfection as a police officer.

The biggest handicap for “Big Trouble” was that it was set to premiere in 2001, but the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks put that off until 2002. Because of the delay, the production’s marketing budget was slashed and so had been cut any chance for most to see it.

Frankly and straightforwardly, “Big Trouble” is a gas. It has fall-down funny moments (when the bad guys drive to the airport and are greeted with signs for departures and arrivals and one deadpans, “We’re arriving, but we’re departing.”) to less conventional humor of having Martha Stewart’s head on a dog (yes, there is context and it makes sense) and also a little toe-licking (also in context).
Combined, the supporting cast of “Big Trouble” far outdoes the headliners. From Stanley Tucci to Zooey Deschanel to Dennis Farina and especially to Garofalo, who appears to be out of character for her, but manages a tremendous performance and knocks an out-of-the-park homerun with it.
I cannot refine the plot of “Big Trouble” any more than just noting it begins with teenagers playing a game; two dysfunctional families; a homeless man living in a tree; a couple of frustrated hitmen who become even more frustrated by my favorite team (the University of Florida Gators); and a nuclear bomb.
OK, it’s safe to note that things get more than a little strange!
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Big Trouble.” It is available on a very limited number of subscription services and also available to rent on a variety of streaming platforms. You will thank me later, if you find and watch “Big Trouble.”
