Ticket to the Movies: ‘Happy Gilmore’ among the best golf flicks

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s take a look at Adam Sandler’s classic golf comedy “Happy Gilmore.” You don’t get much in the way of supporting actors, but you get a wonderful cameo with the legendary game show host Bob Barker (“The price is wrong, b***h!”).

“Happy Gilmore” is one of the more notable golf movies and stars Adam Sandler in the title role. I write “notable” because there are few golf movies worth watching. “Tin Cup” with Kevin Costner is one from the same year as “Happy Gilmore,” but it is a terribly weak and disappointing film and, outside of the greatest golf movie ever (“Caddyshack”), “Happy Gilmore” is miles ahead of it.

The thing with Sandler movies is that you either love his work and comedy or you wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole (do they still have those?). I’m a big fan and enjoy his work while easily admitting I know he isn’t another Laurence Olivier at the Royal National Theatre. But, then again, who is? I find Sandler funny; his movies are entertaining; and nearly all have enduring moments that elevate them.

“Happy Gilmore” is the story of a failed ice hockey player with a huge slap-shot and a volcanic temper (Sandler in the title role) and he makes his way onto the professional golf tour after wowing folks at a driving range with consistent 400-yard+ drives. Sandler becomes the chief antagonist to “Shooter McGavin,” played well by journeyman actor Christopher McDonald.

“Happy” becomes the student of a one-armed black golf pro (Carl Weathers) who said “they” wouldn’t let him play on tour. Sandler replies, “Aw, I’m sorry, because you’re black?” “Hell, no. Darned alligator bit my hand off,” he snaps as he reveals a wickedly obvious fake wooden hand.

Although I’m a big fan of “Happy Gilmore,” I have to note that its sequel (“Happy Gilmore 2”) is just dreck and I’m sorry to evaluate that Sandler was just doing it for the paycheck. Yes, I know all actors do roles and get paid, but, c’mon!

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Happy Gilmore.” It is available on several subscription services and to rent or buy on a variety of streaming services. You will thank me later for “Happy Gilmore.”
