Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go with “Parenthood” from director Ron Howard. It’s an ensemble cast, family story … but accurate and might hit too-close to home because, like most families, “Parenthood” features one with toxic elements.
“Parenthood” focuses on the family of Steve Martin and Mary Steenbergen. He’s the son of Jason Robards, who is the big-mouth patriarch of the “Buckman” family – he’s grandiose in his outlook, while being a basically miserable human being to have to experience. The rest of the “Buckman” family includes two daughters with their own family issues as well as a worm of another son, played by Tom Hulce.
Although the cast is sterling and is studded with Oscar winners and nominees (plus a Golden Globe nominee and two Primetime Emmy winners), it is Robards’ and Hulce’s work that stand above the rest. Each gives a performance leaving you hating their guts after the film ends.
Further, “Parenthood” was the first major film shot at Universal Studios Florida in Orlando and has one scene shot at my beloved University of Florida in Gainesville.
Along the way with “Parenthood,” you get Keanu Reeves as an empty-headed but surprisingly thoughtful and endearing young man who’s married to one of Robards’ granddaughters; and finally a young Joaquin Phoenix (it was his last film credit as Leaf Phoenix) with a fixation on porn that is uncovered and explained in blunt terms by Reeves to Phoenix’s mother.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Parenthood.” It is available on a limited number of subscription services and is available to rent or buy on other streaming services. You will thank me later for “Parenthood.”
