Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Shallow Hal.” Here’s a sensational effort from the Farrelly brothers, who brought you “There’s Something About Mary.”
“Shallow Hal” is one of my all-time favorite films that is little-remembered, but simply wonderful. Jack Black stars as the self-centered egotist who is transformed by a self-help guru (Tony Robbins in a great cameo) to just see the good inside a person and therefore make no judgments about their physical appearance.
From a “shallow” existence to getting pleasure just from the interactions with folks that he now sees the wonder and good in them, Black becomes a totally changed human being. Then, he gets changed back and the whole thing blows up in his face.
“Shallow Hal” has a great supporting cast, too, from Bruce McGill who plays “Hal’s” dying father with totally sexual advice from his deathbed; to Jason Alexander as his best friend and also self-absorbed egotist; and veteran character actor Joe Viterelli, who plays the father of “Hal’s” girlfriend.
I’m not going to write much about Gwyneth Paltrow, who does a very milquetoast job in this one. I’ve never liked her work and she should stay off-screen and keep peddling her crap to the gullible.
In any case, you’ll find “Shallow Hal” to be endearing and ultimately uplifting. The scene where he encounters children at a hospital where he saw them first for their inner beauty and then realized it was a burn unit after he again sees people in their true physical appearance.
Make sure you see “Shallow Hal” … you’ll enjoy it … I guarantee it!
