Well, folks, here we are yet again: Today is Aug. 25, 2025, and that means it is the 62nd anniversary of the climactic date in Frederick Forsyth’s novel “The Day of the Jackal.” I’m a bit sad this year because Forsyth passed June 9, 2025, and I’ll always be in his debt for spurring a reading habit that continues through this day.

From here, I’ll let my previous post(s) do the talking today:

I first read the paperback version of “The Day of the Jackal” and the experience flipped a switch for someone more accustomed to textbooks in school! “The Day of the Jackal” was a revelation because I found that I could enjoy reading as a pastime and so became enthralled with the book and later the film version of it that I’ve made it a personal holiday.

For many years, I considered “The Day of the Jackal” to be my favorite novel of all time. However, while great and a milepost in my reading history, “The Day of the Jackal” is now either second or third (depending on my frame of reference at the time) behind No. 1 from the late Peter Gent called “North Dallas Forty” and the sometimes No. 2 from the late Hunter S. Thompson called “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”

Today, I am at the dozen mark of August 25s on my blog for posting something about “The Day of the Jackal” novel and its corresponding film. If you need a reminder or would just be discovering it, Forsyth’s novel “The Day of the Jackal” is about an assassin on the trail of French President Charles de Gaulle and arrives at that novel’s climax on a hot day in August of 1963.

If you haven’t read the novel, which was published in 1971, it is the first place to start. The film is outstanding and the gold standard as an example of how to bring a novel to the big screen. However, you need to start with the source material. So, it’s easy to find “The Day of the Jackal” in paperback or e-book. You’ll see it’s my movie suggestion for today on my blog.

Also, I’ve included the links below to all my “Jackal” content.

Enjoy!

So, here are the links that will help you enjoy your own “Day of the Jackal” …
